I've been an Instructional Designer for many years, but only recently have entered into the world of online content development. Admittedly, I was nervous. Would I be able to pick up on the program and be able to begin creating content quickly, or would I struggle?Kevin Siegel has done a great job of making Captivate 9.0 easy to learn, with step-by-step instructions and numerous helpful how-to's that will make future developmental efforts much easier. The support materials (downloadable templates and projects) are extremely helpful, and well thought-out, with logical progression through Captivate 9.0's many capabilities.If you're an experienced Captivate user, this workbook probably won't do much for you; you're better off with lynda.com and the "Adobe Captivate 9 First Look" by Pooja Jaisingh (her other tutorials via Adobe.com are also useful). That said, if you're new to e-learning development software, and Captivate 9.0 is your entry point, as it was mine, then this material is a wise investment.
This book has specific directions for completing many Captivate tasks. It does only cover the basics--there is another book with more advanced skills--but it covers them in a very clear, concise way. You can follow along step by step and learn functions like saving and opening projects, navigating the software, creating software simulations, etc. It's very useful, though again it's only the basics--for that reason it does seem a little pricey. I've gone through the whole book and am looking to learn more, so I may even purchase the more advanced one. Overall, I'm happy with it.
This was a great introductory book for me, because I had no prior experience working in Captivate. It is organized very well. Each chapter is set up like a learning module. As you work through, it builds. The benefit was having all the files to use that come free with the book. This is well worth the money for newbies.
In my 20+ years as an instructional designer, I’ve written numerous guides and job aids to train others, and I’ve used many guides to train myself on software. This is by far the best guide I’ve used to self-train. Learning-by-doing is, I think, the easiest way to learn software. The step-by-step instructions and the reasoning and explanations behind them were easy to understand and quick to read. Looking forward to following up with the "Beyond..." book.
I keep having to Google what I need because I can't find it in the book. Also, there are typos.
The two books in this series made sense and gave me a firm understanding of the basics of Adobe Captivate. The hands-on exercises were practical and well laid out to take you through the training.
I like the book but would have liked to see how to create a Captivate project from the ground up.The material you can download and use throughout the examples is excellent but some of the materials the bookies a little dated if you have Captivate 10. I also stay away from Flash so that part of the book wasn't helpful.In general, very good descriptions and nice flow to the book.
I'm new to Captivate, but this book didn't offer anything I hadn't figured out on my own. I should of known NOT to make this purchase when there wasn't a preview of the information available. I ended up buying E-Learning Uncovered: Adobe Captivate 9. I would imagine the author doesn't want to "teach" you too much in one book, after all, why would you need to buy the other. He should have just changed $30 for the Kindle version and not skimped on the content, very frustrating.
