This is the most interesting, most well organized book on astronomy I have ever read. The photos are amazing. The graphics and charts that explain concepts are extremely well done and lead the reader through a gentle learning curve, where one thing builds to another until a full picture comes to light. The methods astronomers use are extremely well explained, visually, to make complex ideas easier to remember than just text. The whole presentation is wonderful. The book is a worthy learning tool. For what it is worth, I had just begun to develop an interest in the universe this year (I am retired) and had recently read The Elegant Universe by Brian Greene and also Astrophysics for People in a Hurry by Neil deGrasse Tyson, both highly recommended books, very well written but a bit hard to grasp since the visual helps were sparce. They stirred my interest, however. Now, as I read through Universe by Robert Dinwiddie, and as I study each set of graphics, I am led through the ideas in ways I can comprehend and remember. The book is sophisticated enough for science-oriented people to get a lot out of it if they study each page fully, but I think it also has much to offer those who might simply wish to scan through the marvelous images of planets, stars, nebulae, galaxies, etc. A breathtaking journey.
I've been enthralled by astronomy since I first realized the Earth is but a grain of sand in the vast ocean of the cosmos. All our history, triumphs, and tragedies occurred on this pale blue dot (as Carl Sagan would say).I've read a multitude of books on astronomy, and this one is the first to perfectly blend breathtaking images with geuinely deep detailed text, and keep it all up to date.Keeping astronomical info up to date is my biggest concern since astronomy is revolutionized every year in the 21st century.This book covers everything including cosmology, chemistry, and physics. I can't stress how much I love that this book includes an in-depth discussion of the fundamentals of molecules and physical laws. You cannot have a full comprehension of astronomy without knowing the chemistry, physics, and cosmology underlying the formation of the cosmos. Many books focus only on astronomy, and miss the opportunity to tie everything together. This book does not miss that opportunity, and that throws it to the top of my list of astronomy books.
Bought it in 2012. Son read it so much that the covers wore off. After repairing them several times, and the book completely falling apart from continued frequent use, I'm here to buy a new copy. Definitely a five star book. We probably have 100 astronomy books, and this is the clear favorite.
A better title for this book is EVERYTHING THAT YOU WANT TO KNOW ABOUT THE UNIVERSE, BUT AFRAID TO ASK. In a nutshell, this is an authoritative encyclopedia of the universe. The information is just astounding. Everything is presented in detail: stars, nebula, planets, comets, meteorites, star clusters, telescopes, the Big Bang Theory, and other subjects. As an illustration, other similar publications just cover stars in general. This book goes beyond by providing an individual picture and a detailed textual discussion on every major star ever studied..The textual information is supplemented by beautiful colorful pictures. Unfortunately, many famous photographs are not adequately displayed or presented. For example, THE PILLARS OF CREATION in the Eagle Nebula occupies a tiny 2.5" x 2.5" square. The crashing of the remnants of Shoemaker-Levy 9 Comet on Jupiter is completely omitted. The WMAP map that shows the microwave background radiation from the Big Bang is an insignificant 3" x 1.5" figure. Such omissions are inexcusable. Each deserves a full two-page enlargement!
My son says that this book is the most detailed space book he has read, and he is an avid non-fiction space book reader. We originally checked this book out at the public library, but seeing how sad he was to return it, we decided to purchase it for him.
This type of books should be placed in some sort of *every house hold with kids must have* list. This is a true BIBLE!!!When buying it I was thinking about my 8-year old son who's crazy about googling about astronomy and making us a slideshow presentations. But when received I realized I can spend most of my time browsing it. Open any random page - read it - you will learn something new even though you think you know more than average person about astronomy. Don't be confused by amount of illustration - it's not just pictures book. It has tons of information. Bottom line - love it, it becomes a one of the best books in our house.
In looking for a good book about astronomy, I was surprised by the lack of comprehensive volumes on the topic. I for one am hugely interested in how the solar system works, and especially stars and planets beyond our own sun.Look no further. This book is a ROYAL FEAST of gorgeous pictures and enthralling facts and figures about our universe. For anyone who has an insatiable curiosity about the cosmos, this book is perfect. All eight main planets in the solar system are described in detail, and a surprising bonus was the descriptions of all the major moons of the outer planets! In addition to this, surface maps are provided of the moon as well as the terrestrial planets.For constellation buffs, about 40% of the book is dedicated to information about the constellations and monthly star charts.
This book is loaded with beautiful pictures and illustrations. What really surprised me though is all of the up to date information. This book is loaded with facts and awe inspiring pictures. It is a must for anyone who lives astrometry. The pictures lure you in and before you know it you've been reading and looking at pictures for hours. Also a great reference for anything space or star gazing. Would make a tremendous gift also. The book is both thick and tall. Also says its $50.00 on the bar code but Amazon is cheaper. If your on the fence don't be. At this price this book is just to good. In all honesty after having it now I'd have gone as far as $100 to have this book. Brilliant
