We have several Elmer books and always check some out from the library. We had to buy this one though because it is hands down her favorite of the Elmer books. Easy to follow story that discusses good sportsmanship. She's 3 now...was 2 when we first checked it out from the library and it holds up well. She laughs, points out the colors, points out the naughty elephant, etc while we read so it's very engaging. Highly recommend this one.

Grand-children love these books !

Elmer and his cousin, Wilbur, were walking through the jungle “when a group of noisy young elephants came racing past.” Of course these young elephants weren’t colorful patchwork ones like Elmer and Wilbur, but were just plain old gray. Even the blue birdies in the trees looked out, wondering just what they were up to. They were racing, of course! Who was the fastest elephant in the whole jungle? There was a lot of bickering about who was the fastest of all, but when one elephant declared “You both cheated,” the race was on. A real race that is. Elmer told them all that the race would be on the following week.Practice, practice, practice! The animals of the jungle. From those blue birdies to the lion and tiger, began to gather ‘round to watch the race. Nine elephants, each “decorated with a different color,” were ready to race. Elmer and Wilbur stood behind the lineup of very colorful elephants, ready to cheer them on. Elmer reminded them to “Remember it’s not just who is fastest or slowest, but how you run the race.” And then they were off! The monkeys at Monkey Corner told them to go the wrong way, directions that caused Pink and Violet to lose their way. At Red Rock Valley the cheating began. With all this confusion, would any of the little elephants know just who was the fastest?Once again, Elmer the Patchwork Elephant, has yet another charming tale young children will love. As with many of the Elmer books, there’s a lesson to be learned. Of course it’s easy to see that when some of the elephants begin to cheat and those monkeys don’t play fair, their behaviors are simply not acceptable. I’ve definitely turned into an Elmer fan and have been enjoying the series of books. If you haven’t yet introduced Elmer and the other critters of the jungle to your little one, you’re in for a real treat when you do!Grades: PreK to 3ELMER BOOKS:ElmerElmer’s Colors (board book)Elmer and RoseElmer’s Special DayElmer’s ChristmasElmer and the RainbowElmer and the HipposElmer’s First Counting BookElmer’s OppositesElmer and the Birthday QuakeElmer and the RaceThis book courtesy of the publisher.
