I almost thought a different author wrote this 4th book. The 1st three were good reads, but I almost gave up on this one. The number of people whose eyes widened in surprise or narrowed for some reason, the amount of teeth grinding, the weak and unconvincing character portrayal all conspired to make me give up, but I pushed through to the end because the basic plot and story were good, r he poorly writing just got in the way.
I just finished this series and am absolutely upset that the 5th book is not out yet and that there is no news on when it will be out. I MUST HAVE IT! This is an awesome series! The story drags you in and does not let go of you until you turn the last page only to drag you in again as you open the next part of the story. Seriously I just spent 3 days neglecting everything else to read these stories! Anything I would write here about the story would lead to major spoilers so I'm not going to do the. Instead I will say simply that the main characters of this story are ones that you will come to care about. I would recommend that you start with book one and work your way through. Buy them. They are completely worth the money, the time and the effort.
I enjoyed the first three books; this book continues with the exploration of New Earth. This book is ok, but lacks the path and drama of the previous three.A new character, Dash, is introduced. Connor and Lenora, but heads about Dash’s actions.I found Dash, to be annoying and impulsive. I suppose this book is about Dash learning about limits and how his actions impact others.Three and a half stars.
Even though this type series of books is considered sci-fi military, I have found the high quality writing style helps me in my personal life choices and relationships. This series also has helped me in my work career. I am 63 and have found myself in a new career field of Safety - Health - and Environmental Manager. I know much about this field, but am faced with researching and documenting required safety topics for my new Employer who has very little documents. Reading this series, and especially Sanctuary, has also helped my as I developed new relationship and trust with my employer and my co-workers. I am looking forward to the next book!Dave
A continuation of a good story but for a glaring distraction that kept popping up. The seemingly endless commitments about one of three things, the jutting of a chin, the line of someone’s mouth and mostly..... the eyebrows! The arching, the knitting, the drawing in, the the raising of one or both, the pushing out. How do you push out eyebrows? The furrowed eyebrows, the questioning eyebrow, and then using one of the eyebrows along with the line of the mouth or the jutting of the chin. I would just start to get past the of one of the three references then another one gets thrown in again. I think that this is what editors are for, when you start overusing a phrase again and again. I just found it distracting and soon found myself looking for them and I was not left wanting. I’m not sure if this is the last book in the series as there are a lot of unanswered questions.
I pretty much hated Lenora and wanted to drop kick her to the curb for being willing to place archaeological research over human lives in the face of a credible threat, and for taking Dash's side (who acted like an immature little punk in need of a$$ kicking), over Connor' s. And so I was frustrated when on top of that Connor apologized to her (???!!!!) like a complete putz, so not manly. Sooo frustrating. Too frustrating, even though it was realistic and made for plot tension. Connor should have shut her and her mouth and her witch mode down, and he didn't. Can't stand the idealistic scientist types who don't give a damn for the practical exigencies of life.I don't know if I'll be able to finish after Connor lost his man card so badly and just decided that he's whipped.Edited to add: I couldn't finish it. Not after I realized the "kid" doesn't have to suffer any consequences other than nightmares.
What do you do if your Connor Gates and have recently retired from the CDF (Colonial Defence Force)? Good question and one best answered by reading Sanctuary. This latest book focuses on the colonists living in Sanctuary, a former habitation of the NEIIS (the original inhabitants of New Earth who have mysteriously disappeared). Sanctuary introduces some new characters, including Dash DeWitt, a young man with a healthy dose of curiousity that eventually leads him and his friends into an extremely dangerous situation. Naturally, Connor is sent off to 'retrieve' the rather eager, if headstrong young man and his friends. I really enjoyed Sanctuary - loved the new characters, action and the plot line. An entertaining read :)
War with the Vemus is over. Connor resign his post as General of the CDF. But the problems continue. A young archeologist,Dash convince others to follow him to a possible new site of the NEIIS,without following the rules. They didn't know, but activated a new signal to the Ryklars. Connor and Ian goes to the rescue and find another problem with the CDF soldier's that help them. They suffered of PTSD (Post-traumatic Stress Disorder). The Ryklars (Dash discovered that they are the NEIIS soldier's) are moving against the Colony city's. Again the survival of the Colony rest in the hands of Connor, with the help of some CDF soldier's and Dash...
